Chasing tires

Since our dog is very large, he tends to chew through his toys fairly quickly. It almost seems like a waste to get him balls or toys like that because he usually doesn't have them for very long. So last spring, we bought him a tire to play with. At first he wasn't sure what to do with it, but lately he is always carrying it around and chewing on it and wanting us to play tug with him with it. Of course, that's not so fun when I'm trying to mow the back lawn and he thinks the tires on the lawnmower are fair game.

Winter

The whistling windows vibrate softly
At the touch of the coming winter's cold kiss
Glancing at the walls around me,
I feel its icy fingers clench into a fist
To try to break through the barrier
And into my solitude enter
For some, this winter cold
Is all they feel and all they know
For in their hearts they are alone.
And they drift through life like falling snow
Searching, needing, wanting
Never knowing where to go
Inevitably falling, never finding
The sunlight through the shadows
I feel pity for those
Who only know and only see the cold
For they are the hopeless souls,
Never growing, and only grow old.
They struggle, but never seem to see
How disonance can be beautiful.
All they feel is hopeless misery
And feed on fear so hearts are empty while bellies full
Oh, I wish that I could somehow show
What joy in life there can be
So that, somehow, through the snow
They see hope instead of agony.
For after the snows of winter do fall
The sun, once sleeping, now awakes
To shed its light upon us all
And from death to birth it makes
Us like the morning, fresh and new
And glistening with fragrant dew
For without winter there could never be
The bright and new and glorious spring.
And one never could see
The joy that makes all birds sing.
So now, as I listen to cold breath
Beating against the window panes,
I contemplate winter's seeming death
And know that it will go from whence it came
And joy will fill my simple life
Though now I may be chilled to bone
I know that after this toil and strife
I will be better - I will have grown.
